Schools' Novel of Death, Psychic Power to Be Discussed

The public was invited to join a group reviewing "The House of Spirits," which is on the core middle and high school curriculum.

A group of parents and educators will meet to discuss a novel on Temecula schools’ reading list about a woman who predicts her sister’s death.

The Parents Reading Core Literature Group will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Old Board Room at the Temecula Valley Unified School District Offices.

Dianne Vaez, the former director of curriculum and instruction, plans to head the group in a discussion of Elizabeth Allende’s “The House of Spirits,” one of the novels on the district’s core literature list.

The group will also choose novels and meeting dates for next school year, and family members of Temecula Valley Unified School District students were invited, according to Barbara Burkett, spokesperson for the Temecula Valley Council of Parent Teacher Associations.

The goal of the group is to get parents involved in their students’ work, prompt discussion about books in their families and encourage reading for pleasure.

“The purpose of Parents Reading Core Literature is to provide parents with insight into what their students have read or may be reading and hopefully, to foster a dialogue between parents and their students,” Burkett said.
