Temecula's Memorial Day Observance Ceremony Planned, Flags Of Honor Will Fly
A special event is planned at the Temecula Duck Pond on Memorial Day, as flags will grace the growing Temecula Veterans Corner.

TEMECULA, CA — This May, the City of Temecula will once again host its annual Memorial Day Observance Ceremony.
The event begins at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, at the Temecula Duck Pond and Veterans Memorial, located at 298250 Ynez Road.
"Join us at the Temecula Duck Pond as the City of Temecula and Veterans of Foreign Wars, to pay tribute to our fallen heroes," a city spokesperson said.

When you go, the Temecula Duck Pond fence will be lined with American flags.
There is also the "Letters from Home Veterans Memorial," designed by artist Christopher Pardell. The memorial is at the top of the wheelchair-accessible ramp and the “Path of Honor.”
The paths are comprised of permanent granite pavers, each engraved with the names of men or women who have served our nation in our Armed Forces during peace or war at any time in our history, from the Revolutionary War through the current conflicts. The “Path of Honor” was founded in 2004 by David Michael, PH1 USN, a decorated WWII veteran of the Iwo Jima campaign.
The Fallen Heroes Memorial, alongside the Path of Honor, is the most recent permanent memorial to those who gave all from our community.
"The inspiration for the Memorial came in the wake of March 19, 2016, when Temecula resident and Marine Staff Sergeant Louis Cardin, a 27-year-old field artilleryman with Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines, tragically was killed in action while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S. military's campaign against ISIS," according to the city website. "Cardin was praised for his valor in ensuring the safety of his fellow soldiers when he was killed."
The Fallen Heroes Memorial was unveiled on Nov. 8, 2018, and remains one of the City’s most visible tributes to its military community and to the sacrifice our servicemembers make.

The most recent addition to the Duck Pond-area memorials for veterans is the American Flag display.
Sponsored American flags will be displayed along the perimeter of the Temecula Duck Pond during Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The Memorial Day flag display will be on view May 18 through June 1, 2026, officials said.
Each sponsored flag costs $30 and includes a personalized dedication card. When the display is over, sponsors can take the flag and dedication card as keepsakes, officials said.
"The new Flags of Honor program is a heartfelt way for our community to come together in remembrance and gratitude. Each flag represents a story of service and sacrifice, and this program allows us to honor those individuals in a deeply personal and visible way," said Mayor Jessica Alexander.
Memorial Day is a day to reflect on military personnel who gave their lives in service to their country, particularly in battle or from battle-related wounds.
Its counterpart, Veterans Day, on the other hand, honors those who have served the country in war or peace — dead or alive — although it’s largely intended to recognize living veterans for their sacrifices.
Of the two, Memorial Day is considered the far more significant holiday because it honors those so devoted to the ideas of America and service that they were willing to lay down their lives.
Vets May Not Want To Be Thanked
With all good intentions, people often thank veterans for their service.
“This may surprise you, but I am not comfortable with ‘thank you’ for your service,” retired Lt. Robert Yates, a helicopter aircraft commander and search and rescue pilot, told Military.com, a news and resource site for veterans, military personnel and their families.
