200 Union City High School Students Stage Walkout Over Trump

UNION CITY, CA — About 200 students walked out of James Logan High School in Union City on Monday in protest of Donald Trump's election as U.S. president, New Haven Unified School District officials said.

At 11:30 a.m., the students walked out of class and marched to City Hall, carrying signs that read "Not my president" and "Love trumps hate."

"The peaceful protest was in response to rhetoric that accompanied the recent election that has caused significant distress to many parts of this community and the nation," district spokesman John Mattos said in a statement.

Students spoke out in front of the police station, including personal stories of fear, anger and uncertainty, Mattos said.

Students planned the protest over social media, and the protest's organizers stressed that the action remain peaceful and respectful.

School staff worked with students and police to ensure that the protest was safe and positive, according to Mattos.

"As a result of this cooperation, the students were able to peacefully express their concern over the election and results," Mattos said.

Most students returned to campus at 1 p.m., before the end of lunch.

Students in Marin and Sonoma counties also staged walk-outs on Monday.

San Francisco, Napa, Alameda, Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties saw similar student protests on Wednesday and Thursday.
