6 People, Including Baby, Displaced by Fire This Afternoon
A Hayward Fire spokesman said the home sustained about $40,000 in damage.

Five adults and a 1-year-old baby were displaced when a back bedroom caught fire in their Hayward home today, a fire captain said. The fire was reported at about 1 p.m. at 847 Bishop Ave., near Schafer Park Elementary School, Hayward Fire Capt. Don Nichelson said.
Flames sparked in the home’s back bedroom, but it took firefighters less than five minutes to put the fire out. Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof and the bedroom was left uninhabitable. There was also moderate smoke damage throughout the home, which sustained about $40,000 in damage, Nichelson said.
The six residents are temporarily homeless. Nichelson said they are contacting family and are still determining if they need assistance from the American Red Cross.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze, but it appears as though it might be electrical, Nichelson said.
