Air BNB Tax Goes Into Effect In Union City

The city could receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra revenue every year.

UNION CITY, CA — Union City started collecting hotel taxes from Airbnb rentals this month, which could raise the city hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

According to the city, Airbnb guests who stay in Union City are now charged a 12.87 percent Transient Occupancy Tax as of Aug. 1. Airbnb will remit the taxes to the city.

Currently, there are more than 70 Airbnb hosts in Union City, typically earning over $9,000 a year, city officials said. Almost three-quarters of them are renting out a private bedroom in their own home.

"This agreement really levels the playing field among short-term rentals in our city, and helps keep the opportunities fair for small and large operators," Union City manager Tony Acosta said. "We appreciate
Airbnb's cooperation throughout this process."
