UPDATE: One Transported to Hospital Following Hazmat Incident in Union City

Police this afternoon have cleared the scene of a suspicious materials incident in Union City after investigators determined the suspicious substance came from a package containing broken printer ink cartridges. Officers responded at 11:25 a.m. to a possible hazardous materials spill at Dowe Business Park in the 32900 block of Alvarado-Niles Road, according to police.
One person was transported to a hospital after opening the package and complaining of burning eyes and a runny nose after coming into contact with a yellow powdery substance, Union City police Cmdr. Ben Horner said. Police said the victim was an office worker at a small research and development company. Investigators said the substance came from broken printer ink cartridges.

The employee was transported to a hospital as a precautionary measure. An Alameda County hazardous materials team responded to the scene to investigate the chemical makeup of the substance, according to Horner. The scene was cleared around 1:30 p.m.
