UNION CITY, CA — A man with a record for being armed was taken into custody after he barricaded himself in a stolen vehicle Friday afternoon, Union City police said.
Alonzo Hernandez, 26, of Milpitas, held police at bay for more than two hours before he was arrested with the help of a police dog in the 1000 block of E Street, police said.
A woman whose 2007 Honda Pilot was stolen in San Jose told police dispatchers that the suspect might be in Union City and was known to carry a firearm. Officers located the vehicle and brought it to a stop in the 1000 block of E Street.
Hernandez, who was alone in the vehicle, refused repeated commands to get out.
"Due to information that the suspect may have been armed and his increasingly erratic behavior, additional resources were requested, including armored rescue vehicles, an unmanned aircraft system, a police K-9 team, crisis negotiators, and assistance from a neighboring law enforcement agency," police said.
Nearby residents were advised to shelter in place, and an alert was issued asking the public to avoid the area. Emergency medical personnel were also staged nearby as a precaution.
Hernandez eventually left the vehicle and was taken into custody with the help of a police K-9, the department said.
