CA Distinguished Schools: Union City School Honored

UNION CITY, CA — Alvarado Elementary School in Union City has been selected for the 2020 California Distinguished Schools Award Program. According to the California Department of Education, the program recognizes outstanding education programs and practices.

Schools are chosen for closing the achievement gap and for achieving exceptional student performance. Alvarado Elementary is the only school chosen in the New Haven Unified School District this year.

Alvarado's second year principal Eric Barron credits everyone involved with the school for the achievement, "I am so proud to be a part of the Alvarado Community. What a wonderful group of teachers, students and families to interact with on a daily basis. This award is a testament to the dedication and hard work of all of these community members. Thank you once again and 'Go Wildcats!'"

Barron reports that the school's test scores are going up in English/Language Arts and Math, while attendance is improving, and suspensions are going down.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said, "These outstanding schools don’t just educate students; they also provide the young people of California the tools they need to be successful after graduation. Thanks go to all the staff at these schools—teachers, administrators, classified employees—and parents, who are working together to provide high-quality educational experiences for all of their students."

All California Distinguished Schools will be honored on Feb. 10 during an awards ceremony at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim.
