UNION CITY, CA — Counseling is available today to students and staff at James Logan High School in Union City following the traffic death of a senior early Sunday morning, the school's principal said.
Principal Abhi Brar is also encouraging parents to send their children to school following the death of senior Shane Marcelino, an 18-year-old woman. Marcelino died when the Toyota Yaris she was a passenger in
collided with a Chevrolet Malibu.
Police responded at 2:27 a.m. Sunday to the collision at the intersection of northbound Fremont Boulevard and Darwin Drive. Police said the driver of the Toyota was turning left from southbound Fremont Boulevard onto eastbound Darwin Drive when it collided with the Chevrolet traveling north on Fremont Boulevard.
Marcelino's mother, a 39-year-old Fremont woman, was driving the Toyota. She suffered injuries that were considered major but not life-threatening.

Brar said Marcelino was set to graduate in about a month. "She was an amazing human being," Brar said. "She had a bright future ahead of her." Marcelino was in several honors programs and was part of the band
program. Brar described her as kind and talented.
Ten counselors, including two social workers and two psychologists, are available today at the school, Brar said.
Parents can also call the school to obtain community resources that may be available so their families can cope with the teen's death.
Officers are investigating whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision, but that could take weeks, police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said today.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to get in touch with Fremont police traffic Officer Alexander Gregory at agregory@fremont.gov.
