Cal State East Bay ranked No. 7 in the West for Most International Students by U.S. News and World Report, in addition to placing first among all California State Universities. The university rankings were split into four regions, each reporting schools with the highest percentage of international students. International students accounted for 8 percent of the total enrollment at CSUEB.
“The internationalization of our campus encompasses a symbiotic relationship,” said James Houpis, CSUEB provost and vice president of Academic Affairs. “Our students, coming from over 80 different countries, enrich our classrooms with new and diverse perspectives concurrently absorbing California’s rich culture through their study abroad experiences.”
Cal State East Bay offers a range of programs for international students to aid in the transition to Cal State East Bay and the United States. For instance, the Center for International Education provides immigration and advising services to prospective and newly-admitted international students, while the American Language Program (ALP) arranges English language conversation partners for students learning the language.

ALP also offers diploma, certificate and intensive English programs for students from all over the world. ALP students can enroll in specialized programs, such as the pre-MBA program which prepares international students for graduate business school, or take advantage of certificate programs designed for international graduate students, such as international business or paralegal studies.
The majority of students, however, enroll in ALP for its Intensive English Program. The program, designed for pre-matriculated students, gives participants conditional admission to the university on the condition that they raise their English proficiency to meet program standards.

Since its inception in 1978, ALP has welcomed students from China, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Vietnam, Thailand, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany and Sweden.
“The large number (of international students) is a compliment to every person and office on campus,” said Ray Wallace, CSUEB executive director of International Programs. “This is a welcoming, supportive environment for persons from every corner of the planet.”
