Deputy Suffers Broken Leg in Alleged DUI Collision

An Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy suffered a broken leg early this morning in Castro Valley as he was stopping a bicyclist on a warrant, a spokesman for the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputy Jason Deitschman was stepping out of his patrol car just after midnight on East Castro Valley Boulevard when a 2012 BMW X5 allegedly driven by a person under the influence struck the deputy’s leg, sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

The BMW continued on and crashed into a telephone pole, Nelson said. Law enforcement officers arrested the BMW driver, identified as Hayward resident Rufus Coleman, 36, on suspicion of felony DUI and booked him into the Santa Rita Jail, he said. The deputy, who is also on active reserve as a decorated Battalion Sgt. Maj. in the U.S. Marines, is being treated this morning at a hospital, Nelson said.

The cyclist cited by the deputy had a $20,000 warrant out for his arrest on drug-related offenses, he said. Deputies gave the cyclist a notice to appear in court and released him, Nelson said.
