An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.1 struck an area near Hayward this afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey is reporting. The quake was reported at 2:37 p.m. about 1 mile southeast of Hayward and about 3 miles south-southeast of Castro Valley, according to the USGS.
The temblor had a depth of 2.7 miles, according to the USGS.
