UNION CITY, CA — The Union City Police Department will hold a DUI Checkpoint Saturday night from 7 p.m to 2 a.m.
The exact location has not been announced. Police say it is a heavily travelled location within the Union City limits.
The department said DUI Checkpoints promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road. In addition to signs of alcohol use, officers will look for impairment due to prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs. Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Stan Rodrigues said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, the department said, as well as a suspended license.
