The latest Netflix original Derek is wonderful. That's the best I can summarize it.
It's kindhearted, tender and charming but also, its thoughtful, challenging and inspiring. I don't know of any show I've ever watched that compares to it.
I really didn't expect too much when I started watching it. It's the least hyped , least marketed of the Netflix originals. I knew Ricky Gervais from the UK Office and expected Derek to be more or less the same, a snarky , edgy crude dark comedy of sorts.. So I watched the first episode with those expectations ... and it turns out to be the exact opposite.. the show is soft and kind. It focuses on subjects like sacrifice, loving the unloved, selflessness, and death. It also focuses on a group of people who usually don't get a lot of mainstream media focus, the elderly.

The show focuses on the people within a nursing home for elderly people. Derek is the title character but he is rarely the focus of the story, the story is really about the people who work in the retirement home and the issues they have to deal with it... I don't know how realistic it is since I don't have any experiences with nursing homes, but i think most of the stories are believable.
It's is a little crude IE I wouldn't watch it with your kids.. but other than that this show is great, I highly recommend it.
