The Filipino Community of Northeast Alameda and Contra Costa Counties hosted a celebration of Philippine Independence Day on July 4, 1946. The event was held at the SDES Hall and had "many thousands of Filipino Americans" as reported by the Alvarado Pioneer.
The Alvarado Chamber of Commerce assisted with the celebration and formed a sub-committee, that suggested a parade "in which all classes join and show our debt of gratitude to the fine work of the Filipino-Americans, who helped fight alongside our boys overseas, and at home did a fine job in raising food in the fields, buying War Bonds, helping the Red Cross, etc." The Chamber raised money to decorate the merchant buildings and the streets of Alvarado.
The event started with a banquet at 3 pm. The program started at 6 pm, with talks given by the Mayor of Hayward, John Haar, Mrs. Felix Diangson of Alvarado, Pacifico Sarabo of the Philippines, and Frank M. Bolima of Mt. Eden, who gave "one of the most important speeches on 'The Birth of a Nation'". Barbara and William Diangson, brother and sister, sang a song. The "noted radio singer" Crispin Dela Cruz also provided a song. Both the American and the Philippine national anthems were sung, led by Barbara Diangson. After the speeches, an orchestra provided music for dancing, which went on until late in the evening.
