Hayward Parolee One of Two Arrested After Allegedly Leading Police on Chase in Stolen Car

A man and woman were arrested in Kensington on Tuesday after allegedly fleeing from police in a stolen car with stolen property, according to police. Police said an officer spotted a “suspicious vehicle” leaving Lake Drive around 11:35 a.m. Tuesday and attempted to stop it, but the driver sped away, prompting a short chase. The officer found the car a short time later in the 700 block of Wellesley Avenue but the suspects had fled the scene. Police learned that the car had been stolen out of Hayward and inside they found a gun, various stolen items and burglary tools.

Officers searched for the two suspects with the help of El Cerrito police, a police K-9 and a California Highway Patrol helicopter but were unable to find them and called off the search around 1:30 p.m. About two hours later, police responded to a report of two suspicious people on Arlington Avenue matching the suspects’ descriptions. Officers arrived in the area and chased the male suspect, who was able to get away. Police Chief Gregory Harman spotted the female suspect on Arlington Avenue and arrested her. Officers launched a house-to-house search in the area of Westminster and York avenues and later located the male suspect hiding in the attic of a home in the 100 block of York Avenue.

Police arrested both suspects, identified as 33-year-old parolee Justin Pereira of Hayward, and 23-year-old Karis Garcia of Oakland, who was wanted on a warrant for a weapons violation. The pair was arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, evading and resisting arrest and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to police. Both were taken to county jail in Martinez.
