The first volunteer fire department had been formed in 1905 with John Ralph as chief. Its equipment consisted of a hose reel and a hose truck to transport it. In 1940, the Alvarado Fire District was enlarged and a pumper was purchased later, a brick heaquarters building was built on Smith Street and a second truck purchased. Anthony Vargas became the fire chief.
