Samantha Phan of Union City will be one of 16 Cal Poly students recognized for awards and accomplishments in Sacramento next month.

UNION CITY, CA — A Logan High graduate is being recognized by the state for winning a prestigious design award.
Samantha Phan graduated James Logan High in 2016 and is now a senior studying business administration at Cal Poly. In October, she and a team of fellow students won the Paperboard Packaging Council’s 2019 Student Design Challenge in Minneapolis— a prestigious design competition.
According to Cal Poly their winning entry was called "Party Box" a packaging system for a gaming console that also functioned as a projector and game board. Their project beat out 50 other teams from 13 other universities across the country.

For winning the design competition, Phan will be among 16 Cal Poly students honored by state lawmakers on March 2. The students will be introduced to the senate and the assembly then recognized for their accomplishments.
Phan says she's honored to be recognized. "It is an honor to represent Cal Poly to share what is possible when students are supported by their university," Phan said. She says she also hopes to use her time at the state capitol to lobby for more school funding.
