Mandarin Immersion Program To Launch In Union City School

UNION CITY, CA — Do you hope that your child will become bilingual in English and Mardarin?The New Haven Unified School District will launch a two-way dual language immersion program for English and Mandarin for incoming Pre-K and Kindergarten students this fall.
The program "fosters bilingualism, biliteracy, enhanced awareness oflinguistic and cultural diversity, and high levels of academic achievement through instruction in two languages," according to the district. For TK through second grade, students will be taught 80 percent of the time in their target language of Mandarin, and 20 percent in English. After that, the percentage of English teaching increases ten percent each year.
Parents who want to enroll their children this fall must attend a mandatory parent information meeting from 5 to 6 p.m. on Jan. 15. Call Angelica Singson at 510-471-1100, extension 60493, to be included in the meeting.
