One Dead in Weekend Crash In Hayward
The head-on collision resulted in a second, 4-car pileup.

HAYWARD, CA — A 54-year-old man died Saturday afternoon after he was involved in a vehicle collision in Hayward that morning, police said. The victim has been identified as Nelson Melendez of San Mateo.
According to police, at 8:47 a.m. the man was driving a black 2008 Honda Civic east on Jackson Street.
As he passed Cypress Avenue, the man crossed over the raised center median and collided head-on with an oncoming white Toyota Rav 4. The female driver of that vehicle suffered moderate injuries, police said.

Four other vehicles traveling west on Jackson Street collided with each other as they tried to avoid the first collision. The drivers and passengers in the second collision were not injured, police said.
The cause of the first collision is under investigation.

Police said that based on the lack of skid marks, the direct course of the Honda and the excessive speed it was traveling, it is possible the man suffered a medical emergency while driving.
