Pedestrian Hurt In Hit-and-Run; Driver Arrested After Fleeing

Police said the Fremont victim was injured in chain-reaction crash when Hayward motorist hit several cars in Union City.

UNION CITY, CA – A 50-year-old motorist from Hayward was caught and arrested after allegedly causing a chain-reaction vehicle crash that injured a pedestrian on Monday afternoon in Union City, according to police.

The Union City Police Department said Michael Gonzalez was driving at a high rate of speed north on Union City Boulevard near Tara Court about 1:53 p.m. when he collided with another vehicle, "swerved out of control" and crashed into three parked cars.

On of the parked vehicles then struck a pedestrian, a 65-year-old Fremont man, who was walking nearby, police said.

Gonzalez reportedly ran from the accident scene, but was caught a short distance away by officers, police said. He was arrested for suspicion of felony hit-and-run and drug charges, police said.

The Fremont victim was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries, but no information was available on his condition, the department said.
