Suspect in Union City Burglaries Nabbed After Fleeing on Foot — Literally— And Abandoning Shoes in Street

Police say the suspects entered occupied homes at night through unlocked or pried doors, then stole the victims' cars as they left.

Union City, CA — The driver of a car allegedly stolen during a recent rash of burglaries in Union City was arrested after he literally fled on foot, abandoning his shoes in the street while trying to run from officers, Union City Police said last week.

Two officers conducting extra patrol in the area of Alvarado and Union City boulevards — an area hard hit by nighttime burglars — are credited with arresting the driver and two other teens suspected in the series of residential burglaries.

According to police, during five separate burglaries, the suspects entered the homes through either an unlocked door or by prying doors open, then quietly ransacking the homes for valuables, and in most cases, stealing a car upon exiting.

Police say the two officers spotted one of the stolen cars while conducting the extra patrol and saw the passengers suddenly flee. The driver also fled a short time later, abandoning his shoes in the process. After a brief foot chase, officers arrested the driver.

Responding investigators were eventually able to arrest the other two suspects and recover some of the stolen property, according to police.
