You may find it strange that today I will be writing about my profession, however I find that it is necessary, because I see this so often from consumers who are looking for an attorney.
You have heard of the saying, "All that glitters is not gold," the same holds true for attorneys. Just because you see a fancy office or a nice suit, does not guarantee a great lawyer. The best way to find a great attorney is for you to know what it is you want accomplished in your particular situation. You would be surprised how many don't know how to tell their story when having an initial consultation with a lawyer.
The purpose of the consultation is for you to ask all the questions you need answered and to determine if the attorney providing the answers is someone you can trust and feel comfortable working with, whether on a short task or long term case.

A good lawyer is one who has had experience in the issues you are needing help with. A lawyer who is willing to accept any kind of case, shows a self motivated interest. A lawyer who guarantees outcomes should raise a red flag, because no case is ever the same and judicial decisions are determined on their own unique facts and particular needs of the parties. Aggressive lawyers aren’t necessarily looking for your best interest, most like to create hostility as it will generate more work and therefore more billable time. A passive lawyer can result in jumping into quick solutions without reviewing the merits and particular needs of the client.
One of my biggest comments is to remind the consumer, that they are the employer, they have the last word, the role of the lawyer is to provide options and guidance, but the lawyer should not be making the ultimate decisions on your case. Open and frank communication is key if you want successful representation.

You should also give yourself plenty of time to interview attorneys. Don't assume a lawyer will be available the next day to handle your case or trial. Please realize time is required to prepare for your case. You may need a declaration, you may need to attach evidence, or have a witness deposed or ready for trial.... Give yourself time to find the right attorney for your case and don't act out of desperation.
