LIFE ElderCare, a non-profit organization serving Fremont, Newark, and Union City that helps seniors and disabled adults live independently in their own home, is participating in the national March for Meals campaign. Initiated and sponsored by the Meals On Wheels Association of America, the intent of the campaign is to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of local communities.
LIFE ElderCare’s campaign has focused on three activities:
1) Wheels for a Million Meals fundraising campaign to purchase a new Meals on Wheels truck

Thank you to everyone who has already donated. The goal is $35,000, and we are very close to achieving that goal. At the beginning of March, the truck was operating but experiencing frequent breakdowns. Now, the truck is completely disabled so the urgency for a new truck has increased! The truck is essential to delivering 350 meals daily to homebound seniors and disabled adults in the Tri-cities area.
Donations for the new truck can be made online at http://goto.gg/16263 or mailed to LIFE ElderCare, 3300 Capitol Avenue, Fremont, CA 94538. Everyone who donates will get his or her name written inside the new truck!

2) Better Homes and Gardens | Mason-McDuffie Real Estate - Fremont annual Giving Day
Realtors spent March 8 volunteering for LIFE Elder Care. Their time was divided between cleaning up a senior’s home and raising funds for the “Wheels for a Million Meals” campaign to purchase a new truck.
The hard-working realtors rolled up their sleeves and got busy scrubbing her entire bathroom and kitchen, and folding a pile of clothes that had filled up her bed. The carpet was steam-cleaned, and before long her house was sparkling clean. The front yard also got a face-lift as bushes and a tree were cleared away. The senior was speechless when she saw her clean home.
Another group of realtors focused on raising funds for LIFE ElderCare’s Wheels for a Million Meals campaign. Better Homes and Gardens reached out to their friends and colleagues with an initial goal of raising $3000.
“By the end of the weekend we had surpassed our goal and raised over $5000 for LIFE ElderCare’s new truck. We are getting a terrific response to our requests for donations, and will continue our fundraising efforts throughout March,” explains Hilda Furtado, Manager of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, Fremont office.
3) Mayors for Meals is an annual event that invites local officials to personally experience the satisfaction and joy of being a Meals on Wheels volunteer. They help volunteers pick up the meals, and ride along as the volunteers deliver these hot meals to seniors and disabled adults in Fremont, Newark, and Union City. This year’s Mayors for Meals was held on March 21. Attendees included Newark Mayor Al Nagy, Newark City Councilmember Sucy Collazo, Fremont Mayor Bill Harrison, Fremont City Councilmembers Vinnie Bacon, Suzanne Chan, Anu Natarajan, and Raj Salwan, Union City Councilmember Emily Duncan, and State Senator Ellen Corbett.
