Two Residents to be Honored for Help in Catching Robbery Suspect

The two stepped in to help when a suspect allegedly tried to pick the pocket of an 85-year-old man shopping at a Union City Safeway store.

Two Union City residents will be honored by the city council later this month for their help in catching a robbery suspect in the act, police said today. The two residents were on hand when a suspect allegedly tried to pick the pocket of an 85-year-old man shopping at a Safeway store at 1790 Decoto Road around 6 p.m. on June 3, according to police.

The victim struggled with the suspect after noticing the theft and attempting to take the wallet back, police said. One witness intervened in the fight, and the suspect ran from the store. However, a second witness then tackled him outside the store and held him until police arrived.

Police arrested Theodore Levy, 48, at the scene on suspicion of robbery and battery on an elderly subject. The victim suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.
