On June 30, 1999, Union City was named an "All America City," one of only ten such cities in the United States. It was chosen from about 300 cities.
Union City was honored for reclaiming a city park from drug addicts who litter the lawns with used needles; establishing before and after school day care programs; and creating a non-profit program that employs 52 people to collect curbside recycling in Union City and Hayward.
