UNION CITY, CA - With all of the recent rain that we've had, the City of Union City is reminding residents to check for standing water around their homes.
Mosquito season is getting underway, and mosquitoes can spread diseases like West Nile Virus and the Zika virus While all reported cases of Zika in Alameda County so far have been travel related, according to the city, mosquito transmission of Zika is expected this summer, according the the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The best way to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne disease is to prevent mosquitoes from hatching.

Mosquitoes only need a small amount of standing water to lay their eggs - so check everything from garbage cans to flower pots and toys. Dump any standing water.
If you have a fish pond, contact the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District (ACMAD) for free mosquitofish, which will prevent the larvae from hatching in your pond.
