Union City Police Shoot Man to Death in Backyard

The officers involved in the shooting were wearing body cams during the confrontation.

UNION CITY - Union City police officers shot and killed a man who allegedly charged at them with a garden tool in the backyard of a home on Monday night, police said today.

Officers responded at about 10:20 p.m. to a 911 call from someone in the 3800 block of Amy Place who reported that a stranger was in her backyard and was pounding on her bedroom window, according to police. Two officers responded and located a man with a “claw-style” garden tool in the backyard of the home, police said.

The officers ordered the suspect multiple times to drop the tool, but instead he charged at them with it, prompting both officers to shoot him, according to police.

Officers gave first aid to the suspect, whose name is not yet being released, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The officers were wearing body-worn cameras that captured the shooting, but police said the videos will not be released while the case is an active investigation.

The shooting is being investigated by Union City police and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
