Union City Woman Arrested On Federal Charges: Prosecutors

She is accused of teaming up with a San Francisco doctor in a scheme to defraud California's State Disability Insurance (SDI) program.

UNION CITY, CA — A federal grand jury indicted Linda Nguyen of Union City and a San Francisco physician, George David, for conspiracy to commit mail fraud and substantive mail fraud, according to US Attorney David L. Anderson and FBI Special Agent in Charge John Bennett.

The indictment was unsealed this week. It accuses Nguyen and David of teaming up in a scheme to defraud California’s State Disability Insurance (SDI) program.

The doctor is accused of providing fraudulent Physician/Practitioner Certifications to support fraudulent SDI applications for non-disabled claimants.

Nguyen is accused of collecting a processing fee for helping people file fraudulent applications using the fraudulent certifications, the indictment claims.

The SDI program is designed to provide partial wage replacement benefits to eligible California workers who are unable to work due to a non-work-related illness, injury, or pregnancy.

Both defendants made their initial appearances before U.S. Magistrate Judge Donna M. Ryu this week. They have been released on bond.

If found guilty of all charges, each faces a maximum of 40 years in prison.
