Woman Killed in Union City Apartment Fire Last Month Identified

The fatal fire was reported on June 18.

A woman who was found dead in a Union City apartment building after a fierce two-alarm fire two weeks ago has been identified by the Alameda County coroner’s bureau as 63-year-old Susan Sholaas of Union City.

The fire on Alvarado-Niles Road near Hartnell Street was reported just before 4:30 p.m. on June 18, Alameda County fire officials said. Firefighters who arrived at the scene found that the fire had already spread through the four-unit, two-story building, Battalion Chief James Watkins said.

Firefighters had difficulty entering some units because of large amounts of materials piled up inside, according to Watkins. Sholaas’ body was found during a search of a second-floor unit, Watkins said. No other injuries were reported in the fire.
