A San Jose man who allegedly had a felony warrant out for his arrest was taken into custody Friday afternoon.

UNION CITY, CA -- A San Jose man who allegedly had a felony warrant out for his arrest was taken into custody Friday afternoon in Union City, police said Saturday. At 3:57 p.m., police patrolling the Union Landing shopping center saw a U-Haul van allegedly parked diagonally across a handicapped spot in front of the Lucky supermarket at 32300 Dyer St.

Police said the vehicle allegedly had no handicap placard.

The engine was running and a female passenger and an infant were in the front seat.

Police said as officers were talking with the female passenger, dispatchers told them that the van had been reported stolen.

The female passenger told police that her boyfriend, 27-year-old Jerry Matthews, was allegedly driving the van.

A short time later, witnesses told officers that someone was running from the Lucky supermarket. The witnesses gave police a description of the person and stores in the area were searched to no avail, police said.

But officers gave security personnel a picture of Matthews and about 20 minutes later a security supervisor called police and told them he was following Matthews through the Union Landing parking lot.

Officers responded and once Matthews saw them he allegedly ran from the parking lot across all lanes of Interstate Highway 880 before being caught on the other side of the freeway.

Matthews was arrested on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle and for the felony warrant, police said.
