Today's riddle: Why do Norway's navy ships all have barcodes? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Six USCG Stations Restore Full Operations Thanks to Record Recruiting (marinelink.com) — Coast Guard Station Vallejo is slated to return to full operations in 2027 after several years of reduced staffing, boosting local search and rescue and maritime security capacity. The change depends on federal 2027 funding, but Vallejo is one of just six prioritized stations nationwide, meaning more personnel, faster responses on the water, and a stronger Coast Guard presence in the community.
2. Oct. 8 Vallejo/Vacaville A-E Source: Faces and Places (timesheraldonline.com) — Recent community snapshots highlight Vallejo's civic and service spirit, from a town hall for school board, county, and city council candidates at the South Vallejo Community Center to recognition of founders of the Vallejo Senior Roundtable. Local Soroptimists also raised funds for women and girls, while World War II veterans were honored at a nearby winery.
3. The Center for Health Journalism announces 2026 Data Fellows (centerforhealthjournalism.org) — Vallejo gets a nod on the national journalism stage as Vallejo Sun reporter Zack Haber is named a 2026 Data Fellow by USC's Center for Health Journalism. Over the coming months, he'll receive training and support to produce data-driven reporting on health and child well-being, potentially bringing deeper, accountability-focused coverage back to Vallejo readers.
4. Thomas Gase Guide: Valkyrie Fever strikes Bay Area (timesheraldonline.com) — Vallejo sports fans get several chances this week to cheer local high school teams, from flag football battles with Bethel for league position to road and home football and volleyball matchups. Alongside these local contests, the guide walks you through key pro and college games on TV, including the surging Golden State Valkyries and NFL and MLB playoff action.
5. Photo exhibit at Vallejo's Autonomous Gallery to showcase rarely-seen side of Gaza (vallejosun.com) — A new exhibit at Vallejo's Autonomous Gallery will feature photographer Lara Aburamadan's intimate images and film of everyday life in Gaza, opening Friday with a reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Vallejo artists are contributing work for a silent auction benefiting Palestinian families, while a local restaurant serves Palestinian-Cuban fusion food, making this both an art event and a community gathering.
