BoX Making in Mar Vista
How Do You Store All Your Beautiful Books in Your Library? Boxes!
BookArtsLA is a non-profit organization devoted to bringing the beauty of printing, binding and collecting artist’s and other handmade books to the public. BookArtsLA’s light filled 1600 square foot studio space houses antique letterpresses, a working bindery and exhibition space. The organization offers a variety of classes, workshops, lectures and exhibitions conducted by celebrated book artists aimed at all levels, from experienced practitioners to those just discovering the art form.

Rhiannon Alpers will be giving a lecture, “Shows and Tells” showing some of her beautiful work and talk about her book art practice and what inspires her work.

Boxmaking: Three ways to house your books and objects
Learn to build three of the most common structures used to protect books or prints: the phase box, slipcase and clamshell box. Using archival bookcloth, bookboard and papers, you’ll learn the basic bench skills and techniques to make your own variations at home: creating formulas, cutting methods at home and in the studio, building tips, and possible variations. We’ll also discuss resources, books and technical handouts for your future boxmaking experiences.
Please note: This is a intermediate class so enrolled students should have basic knowledge of gluing, cutting and some bookbinding experience is needed.
Fee is $250 for the two-day workshop plus a $30 materials fee payable to the instructor. Your materials fee includes these items : bookboard, decorative papers, bookcloth, PVA Glue, Methyl Cellulose, Wheat Paste, Cover weight Papers, Enclosures
Rhiannon Alpers is a papermaker, letterpress printer and book artist. She has taught workshops and college courses at San Francisco Center for the Book, Sonoma Community Center, MarinMOCA, Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, Kala Printmaking Institute, Academy of Art University, University of San Francisco, Stanford University, Filoli Gardens Estate, Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, Feather River Art Camp, Center for Book and Paper in Chicago, Columbia College Chicago, and Santa Reparata School of Art in Florence, Italy.
