The Culver City Symphony Orchestra concludes its 2025-26 season on Saturday, June 20th with A Tribute to Our Roots in Black America, as Maestro Clyde Mitchell and the Orchestra present a powerful Juneteenth celebration featuring works by Florence Price, George Walker, William Grant Still, and Scott Joplin—honoring the enduring influence of Black composers on American music, their notable "firsts", and their links with the history of our Orchestra and of Los Angeles.
Featured works include William Grant Still's "Afro-American Symphony" which, in 1931, became the first complete work by an African American composer to be performed by a major Symphony Orchestra. In 1936, Stll conducted the LA Phil at the Hollywood Bowl, becoming the first African American to conduct a major orchestra.
