Leftover Luxuries formula is simple; local residents, antique dealers, interior designers and home stagers sell their goods on consignment, then Leftover Luxuries provides the venue to bring buyers and sellers together. The company was founded by Wendi Smith, a Charlottesville, Va. based interior designer who hosted her first event in an 800-square-foot space borrowed from a friend, in 2010.

Since then she has organized 42 events, and has two warehouses in Virginia. The success of the company is a testament to the staying power and universal appeal of the luxury consignment market.

“One reason why the event is so attractive is that consignee’s price their own items and receive 50 percent of the sale price,” explained Smith. “By requiring that all consigned items be pre-approved, the quality is kept high, and consignors feel confident that their items are offered in an upscale atmosphere.”

A sense of urgency is generated because the event is temporary and goods sell quickly. Consignors also get a “sneak peak,” and “first dibs” at a kick off party the night before the sale opens to the public.

Smith has hosted events in New York City, Westport, Conn., Atlanta, and now Los Angles, where she is originally from. Leftover Luxuries has been featured in the New York Times, Racked LA and NY, Refinery 29, Daily Candy, local TV news stations, and more.
