The Family Fun of Moving

Yes! Moving can be fun, especially when you include the whole family. Read our tips on making the process smooth for your little ones.

At The Bizzy Blondes, we’ve helped over 2,600 families move throughout the years. I highlight “families” because sometimes we forget that our children are significantly impacted by moving from one home to another. As parents, we are thinking “wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a larger, newer home in a great neighborhood?” Yes, but our children may be thinking something totally different. We’ve discovered that children usually have a different feeling about moving than their parents. Children are thinking things like, “what about my friends,” “will I fit in at my new school,” or “but, I love the park around the corner from our house now.” They can actually develop a fairly high level of anxiety, yet many times they don’t reveal to their parents what they are actually feeling; mainly because they see how excited their folks are and they don’t want to upset or disappoint them.

  • 1. Let your children be part of the process. Make sure your children are introduced to your REALTOR® and get them engaged in seeing where they may be moving. You don’t have to “sell them” on the move, however if they don’t feel that they can voice their opinion, they will feel diminished.
  • 2. Let them be creative. Your children might already be dreaming about the color of the paint in their new room or where the swing set will be located. You can have them draw a picture of how they’d like to set up their toys or maybe even make plans for a treehouse.
  • 3. Make sure they know they can stay in touch with their friends and classmates. Even though you may be moving, it is vital your children understand they can be in touch with their friends from your previous neighborhood and school. Help them find ways to stay connected and keep their relationships active.
  • 4. When packing for the move, make it fun. Let each of your children color on the moving boxes that contain their “treasures.” Allow and encourage them to use stickers, “camp out” for a few days in their new room, or play games that help them adapt.

We want your move to be as happy and stress-free as possible for your entire family. Your “little ones” may have big ideas and emotions about the move. Let them express themselves, participate, and let them know they are not getting lost in the process. When you do, your children will settle in with more peace of mind and you’ll sleep better at night too. At the Bizzy Blondes, we’re with you every step of the way. If you’re thinking of selling your home, have questions about your real estate needs, or you need a recommendation on who to work with while trying find a new home on the Westside — just contact the Bizzy Blondes’ team today here at bizzyblondes.com.
