Las Vegas Gunman’s Girlfriend Arrives At LAX

Video shows Marilou Danley being pushed in a wheelchair through the Los Angeles airport.

LOS ANGELES – The girlfriend of the gunman who authorities say carried out Sunday night's massacre on the Las Vegas Strip is back in the United States Wednesday, and law enforcement officials hope she can shed light on the motive behind the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

Marilou Danley, 62, landed at Los Angeles International Airport Tuesday night on a flight from the Philippines and was met by federal agents at the airport. Video from the scene showed Danley being pushed in a wheelchair shortly after her plane landed around 7:30 p.m., although there was no immediate explanation why the device was needed.

Federal officials did not immediately say where Danley went after arriving in Los Angeles. She was not arrested, and it wasn't immediately clear when, or if, she would agree to be interviewed about Stephen Paddock, who killed himself in the Mandalay Bay hotel room from which he launched his deadly shooting spree, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds more.

Paddock was prescribed an anti-anxiety drug in June that can lead to aggressive behavior, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported, citing records from the Nevada Prescription Monitoring Program showing he was prescribed 50 10- milligram diazepam tablets by Henderson physician Dr. Steven Winkler on June 21.

Paddock purchased the drug -- its brand name is Valium -- at a Walgreens store in Reno on the same day it was prescribed, according to the Review- Journal. He was supposed to take one pill a day.

Diazepam is a sedative-hypnotic drug in the class of drugs known as benzodizepines. Studies reportedly have shown it can trigger aggressive behavior. Chronic use or abuse of sedatives such as diazepam can also trigger psychotic experiences, according to drugabuse.com.

Danley, who lived with Paddock, may hold some of the answers to investigators’ questions as they try to figure out what motivated the well-heeled, 64-year-old professional gambler and real estate investor to unleash hundreds of rounds of ammunition on an unsuspecting crowd of concertgoers Sunday.

Danley has been in contact with investigators while traveling in the Philippines, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said at a Tuesday afternoon news conference.

Investigators found 19 firearms, explosives and thousands of rounds of ammunition in the home Paddock and Danley shared in a tidy retirement community in Mesquite, Nevada — enough firepower to suggest Danley may have useful information, Lombardo said.

Police have revealed that Paddock wired $100,000 to the Philippines, which led police to renew their interest in Danley.

Prior to the attack, Danley was sent away from Las Vegas by Paddock, said her sister in an interview by an Australian television station. In doing so, Paddock spared the woman's life, the sister said. "But that won't be to compensate the 59 lives," she said.

A second sister told the TV station that Danley likely is shocked over the attack and discovery that someone "she loved" committed this attack, "and you thought you know the person yourself."

Here are five facts to know about Danley:

1. Danley flew to the Philippines on Sept. 15, two weeks before the shooting. On Sept. 22, she flew from Manila to Hong Kong, then flew back to Manila on Sept. 25, ABC News reported. The Filipino-born Danley is an Australian citizen who uses an Australian passport when she travels, the Brisbane Courier-Mail reported.

2. Eric Paddock, the gunman’s brother, told NBC News he thinks his brother wired $100,000 to the Philippines in recent weeks to take care of Danley and may have “manipulated her so that she was far away from this and had money.”

“As he was descending into hell … he wanted to take care of her,” the stunned brother of the assassin said.

3. Danley is a “wonderful woman,” Betty Dixon, a neighbor of Danley and Paddock, told the Reno Gazette-Journal. “She is so warm, so outgoing. She was so sweet.” Eric Paddock also described her as “a nice lady” who sent his mother cookies.

4. Danley’s LinkedIn profile listed her last job as a high-limit hostess at Club Paradise in the four-diamond Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno. Casino spokeswoman Teresa Dew told the Reno Gazette-Journal that Danley left her job several years ago and that officials are “cooperating with law enforcement and support their efforts to investigate and address this tragedy.”

5. Danley and Geary Danley, now a resident of Arkansas, were divorced on Feb. 25, 2015, after a 25-year marriage, the Gazette-Journal said. At the time of the divorce, she listed her address as a downtown Reno condominium unit that Paddock owned. She began living there in 2013, the newspaper said.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Las Vegas Wednesday.
