Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth with Help from Sugar Jones

Seriously sweet indulgences are readily available at the Mar Vista Farmers' Market.

If you arrive at Sunday’s Mar Vista Farmers’ Market jonesin’ for decadent cakes and cookies, Sugar Jones Sweet Creations has got you covered. Just a glance at “Today’s Menu” listed on the whiteboard in front of the booth will have you cooing with chocolate-induced euphoria.

Precious McCall, the owner and baker of Sugar Jones Sweet Creations, makes cakes the way she wants to eat them—moist and flavorful. I asked her what makes her desserts so special. She said that she didn’t really know, but that her customers’ responses are always the same when they bite into one of her creations.

“People look at me like I’ve done some magical thing and ask me how I do it. They often respond, 'Oh, so this is what cake is supposed to taste like.' "

Precious created her company five years ago, but it really took off when she hosted a booth at the LA County Fair a few years back. That started sending repeat customers her way. I asked for a tour of the decadent delights on display, and Precious wasted no time.

First up was My Special Day Cake, which Precious originally created for her wedding. It features vanilla and chocolate cake layers with chocolate hazelnut ganache and cream cheese frosting. We moved on to the Triple Layer Brownie, a chocolate brownie with peanut butter mousse and chocolate mousse and whipped cream with salted peanuts on top.

Then she showed off the Caramel Apple Cheesecake Bar with oatmeal cookie crust, the Best Ever Brownie, and Lemon Thyme Shortbread cookies.  She graciously let me sample the shortbread cookies, and I have to say they were heavenly—the perfect blend of herbs, citrus and sweetness.

If that’s not enough to send your taste buds spinning off like a pinwheel, try the Cobblestone Brownie, which layers marshmallow, toasted walnuts, caramel bits and chocolate chips atop a luscious chocolate brownie. And if chocolate isn't your thing, try the Flourless Almond Cookie with cherry amaretto jam.

I asked Precious whether she caters to special dietary restrictions. We both burst out laughing at the thought. After all, the company is called Sugar Jones. That said, she does make a mean vegan cookie. The Chocolate Hug consists of two chocolate sandwich cookies with a peanut butter chocolate filling. As soon as I come down from the Lemon Thyme Shortbread cookie high, I’ll be trying one of those.

Sugar Jones Sweet Creations are available online at SweetSugarJones.com and at the Mar Vista Farmers’ Market which is, by the way, the only farmers’ market selling these delights. Did I mention that Precious hand-delivers your online order?

“I’ve even met people at a McDonald's to hand off their cake,” she said.

I’ll bet most of Mar Vista would venture into a back alley for one of these desserts without a second thought.

Sugar Jones Sweet Creations is at the Mar Vista Farmers’ Market the first and fourth Sundays of the month.
