Wrong-Way Hit & Run Driver Kills Homeless Man In Venice

Police are looking for the wrong-way driver of a black SUV who ran over a sleeping homeless man in Venice and fled the scene.

VENICE, CA — A homeless man was struck and left for dead near the Venice Boardwalk early Thursday morning.

The fatal hit-and-run crash occurred just before 1:30 a.m. at Speedway and Wavecrest Court, according to reports from the scene.

The man was sleeping on the ground in a sleeping bag when he was struck by a wrong-way driver headed down Speedway, NBC4 reported. The driver ran over the victim and then plowed into a pole before taking off, according to authorities.

Police are looking for a black or dark blue GMC Yukon or a Chevy Tahoe. The vehicle has rear-end damage from backing into a pole and a wall, Capt. Gary Walters of the Los Angeles Police Department told reporters at the scene.
