WALNUT CREEK, CA --An improperly discarded cigarette started a two-alarm fire at an apartment building in the Rossmoor area of Walnut Creek this afternoon, causing roughly $140,000 in damage, according to a spokesman for the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
The fire was reported in the 2600 block of Saklan Indian Drive around 2:45 p.m., but it was out by 3:10 p.m., district spokesman Steve Hill said.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they initially thought it was an attic fire, but the point of origin appears to be the back porch or deck behind the building.

No injuries were reported and nobody had to be rescued, but at least one person was displaced. Two people were able to get themselves out of the building without help from firefighters.
The damage was extensive, according to Hill, but limited mostly to one unit. Firefighters had to "open up" the roof of an adjacent apartment due to concerns about fire burning in the attic.
