WALNUT CREEK, CA — Walnut Creek police detectives chased down thieves, recovered thousands of dollars in stolen pet food, and returned the supplies to a Contra Costa County rescue organization after a theft rattled local animal advocates.

The stolen food belonged to Joybound People and Pets, a Walnut Creek-based nonprofit that helps feed and care for animals across Contra Costa County.

Investigators said detectives “put their noses to the ground” and “rattled some cages” while searching for the culprit behind the theft.

Last week, police received an anonymous tip that led to the missing pet food. Police recovered the supplies and restored them to the rescue organization, preventing a potential setback for animals and the organization.

The theft highlights a problem facing animal rescues and shelters nationwide: stolen pet food. While no centralized database tracks the crimes, animal welfare organizations say thefts happen regularly, ranging from break-ins at outdoor donation bins to warehouse burglaries involving thousands of pounds of food.

Advocates say the motives often reveal deeper economic pressures. Some thefts involve desperate pet owners struggling to afford food for their animals during periods of extreme poverty. Others involve organized or opportunistic thieves who target rescues, warehouses and delivery vehicles to resell premium pet food for profit.

For rescue groups already stretched thin by rising costs and increasing demand for services, losing large quantities of donated food can quickly strain operations and reduce aid available to struggling pet owners.
