BAY AREA, CA — Drivers across the East Bay slammed into another punishing morning commute after crashes on Interstate 680 and Highway 580 triggered gridlock from Walnut Creek to Oakland, forcing traffic into slow-moving bottlenecks across several major corridors.
The California Highway Patrol reported a fatal crash involving a motorcycle at 5:45 a.m. Traffic thickened north of Richmond into Oakland while congestion also spread through Walnut Creek and along Interstate 80 approaching the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge.
CHP also reported an injury collision on southbound Interstate 680 north of Geary Road in Walnut Creek that is blocking left lanes and backing up traffic deep into central Contra Costa County. Authorities urged motorists to expect significant delays.
Traffic cleared on HWY-680 by 9 a.m., while the Bay Bridge was still stop-and-go in non-carpool lanes and expected to remain so until at least 10 a.m.
Authorities advised commuters to take public transit or other alternatives.
