BAY AREA, CA — Drivers across the East Bay slammed into another punishing morning commute after crashes on Interstate 680 and Highway 580 triggered gridlock from Walnut Creek to Oakland, forcing traffic into slow-moving bottlenecks across several major corridors.

The California Highway Patrol reported a fatal crash involving a motorcycle at 5:45 a.m. Traffic thickened north of Richmond into Oakland while congestion also spread through Walnut Creek and along Interstate 80 approaching the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge.

CHP also reported an injury collision on southbound Interstate 680 north of Geary Road in Walnut Creek that is blocking left lanes and backing up traffic deep into central Contra Costa County. Authorities urged motorists to expect significant delays.

Commuters crawling through the corridor faced stop-and-go conditions across multiple freeway interchanges as the chain reaction of crashes rippled through the region’s morning traffic pattern.

Commuters should take public transit or other alternatives.
