1. Walnut Creek Council Weighs Tourism Taxes, Hiring Gaps (patch.com) — Walnut Creek residents are being asked to weigh in as the City Council tackles worker shortages, tourism funding, and how much of city service costs should be covered by user fees at Tuesday’s meeting. Leaders will also review job vacancies, renew the Tourism Business Improvement District assessments, and consider budget amendments and November 2026 election resolutions, all during a public session at City Hall and online.
2. Planning Commission Debates Rentals, Alcohol Hours Expansion (patch.com) — Walnut Creek’s Planning Commission is set to debate two short-term rental proposals in residential neighborhoods and a later alcohol cutoff time for Daryoush restaurant on Locust Street. Neighbors near Mandarin Lane are pushing back over safety and neighborhood character, while police report no issues with the downtown restaurant as officials weigh its request for extended indoor alcohol service hours.
3. Revered East Bay school for future ballet stars eyes next chapter (eastbaytimes.com) — Walnut Creek’s longtime Contra Costa Ballet Centre is closing after six decades, but its North Broadway studio will soon be home to the new Orza Academy of Ballet. Local dancers will still have access to elite pre-professional training, as former San Francisco Ballet member Aaron Orza and his wife Kristin take over the space and continue the city’s strong ballet tradition.
4. Coast-to-Coast relay to Celebrate America 250 (contracostaherald.com) — A nationwide American Discovery 250 Relay will pass directly through Walnut Creek this July, with runners and walkers arriving at Heather Farm Park on July 6 and departing July 7. Locals are invited to join relay segments, enjoy a city-hosted breakfast with Save Mount Diablo, and take part in related celebrations as the coast-to-coast route moves from Marin through Contra Costa County.
