On Thursday morning, November 16, Assistance League® Diablo Valley Community Partners Chair Janet Venturino welcomed seven members of the Acalanes Fellowship Lodge, Lafayette, CA. They reported to the chapter offices in Walnut Creek to unpack crates of food and transfer the contents to food boxes designated for recipient families in Contra Costa County.

Ms. Venturino explained that the Food Boxes program offsets end-of-the-month shortages for families. The volunteers’ first task was to reinforce each cardboard box with industrial strength tape to avoid mishaps. She added that each filled food box would contain $65 worth of such staples as peanut butter, hearty soup, applesauce, pineapple chunks, fruit cocktail, potato buds, beans, sweet corn and cornbread stuffing mix. Funding came from Assistance League Diablo Valley Thrift Shop, Lafayette.

The next phase involved CalWorks personnel, who loaded the filled boxes and transported them to county distribution centers located in North Richmond and Pittsburg. The entire effort reaches beyond putting food on the table; it reflects Caring and Commitment; it reflects a hang in there message.
