A Beloved Thai Spot, Pizza Place Go Dark In Walnut Creek, Another In Concord
Possible Walnut Creek and Concord closings could signal a broader restaurant industry shift.
WALNUT CREEK, CA — A longtime downtown favorite known for flaming soup bowls and pineapple-stuffed fried rice has quietly closed its doors in Walnut Creek — and it is not be the only restaurant in the area facing uncertainty.
Kacha Thai, located near the movie theater in the city’s bustling downtown, went dark in late February, leaving regulars wondering whether the closure is temporary or permanent.
Kacha stood out among the city’s Thai offerings because it didn't stick to the familiar chicken satay, pad kee mao, and mango sticky rice routine — rarity even in a city with several inventive Thai kitchens, according to the Bay Area Telegraph.

The owners called the closing on Facebook temporary and "beyond their control," and said that they hope to reopen soon, fueling hope.
The uncertainty comes as another familiar name in the restaurant landscape signals major changes. Papa John's announced plans to close up to 200 locations by the end of this year and eliminate about 7 percent of its 700-person corporate workforce as part of a broader cost-cutting strategy.

By the end of 2027, as many as 300 restaurants could be shuttered nationwide, and along with them, hundreds of jobs could be cut.
Company officials said the closings will primarily affect franchise-owned stores that are not meeting brand expectations or lack a sustainable financial path forward. Specific locations have not been identified, but both Walnut Creek and nearby Concord host a Papa John’s.
For now, the darkened storefront at Kacha Thai is the only confirmed local loss. But with shifting economics in the restaurant industry — from rising costs to changing consumer habits — more changes could be ahead.Whether this is Kacha Thai’s farewell or a brief pause remains uncertain.
