Blocked Extra Point Leads Las Lomas to 10-9 Thriller Over Dublin

Gaels score late dramatic touchdown drive, coming one point short.

There was drama a-plenty for the Las Lomas homecoming game, and it wasn't just the naming of the homecoming king and queen.

With a couple of minutes left in the game, Dublin drove down the field and scored a dramatic touchdown with 33 seconds left on the clock. But the Gaels came up a point short when the Knights' Mitch Frentescu stormed into the backfield and blocked the extra point.

An onside kick failed, and the game ended with a Las Lomas 10-9 victory. Dublin fell to 4-3. The Knights are now 6-1.

Dublin played a better game of ball control in the first half. They scored on an impressive 48-year-old field goal by Alex Marshall to give the Gaels a 3-0 halftime lead.

Las Lomas finally got its offense going in the fourth quarter. With 6:50 left, Quarterback Adam Wood threw the ball to Brayton Milner, who ran it into the end zone for a 51-yard scoring play.

A Gael drive fizzled and the Knights appeared to be on their way to a touchdown against a dispirited Dublin defense when Ardell Romez scampered for 40 yards. But the Gael defense stiffened and Mitchell Howard kicked a 27-yard field goal with 3:44 left for a 10-3 lead.

Then the Gaels put together an inspired drive starting at their own 28 behind injured quarterback Edward Achziger. On a fourth-and-10 with 51 seconds left, Achziger zipped one to Jabari Davis at the 10 to keep the drive alive. Then he threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Josh Yu.

That set the dramatic stage for Frentescu's big block.

Oh, yes. The homecoming queen and king are seniors Keyana Reed and Tommy Miller.
