Patrons lined up hours before Dunkin' Donuts made its official Bay Area introduction early Wednesday morning in Walnut Creek.

WALNUT CREEK - Patrons lined up hours before Dunkin' Donuts made its official Bay Area introduction early Wednesday morning with the grand opening of a Walnut Creek location.

The Massachusetts-based chain has numerous locations on the East Coast, but the new store at 1250 Newell Ave. marks its first Bay Area site.

The store opened at 5 a.m. Wednesday, with some of the earliest customers arriving before 3:30 a.m., spokeswoman Amy Scarlett said.

Scarlett said that as of about 8:30 a.m., more than 5,100 donuts had already been sold.

The most popular flavor, she said, has been the Boston Kreme.

Long lines for today's grand opening have brought waits of up to 45 minutes to the donut and coffee shop, which will be open until 9 p.m. daily.
