Update: WC Teams Lose in Girls Soccer

Update: Dublin High shut out Northgate Saturday night 3-0.

For the Campolindo High girls soccer team, the age-old expression, "the third time's the charm," became true Saturday when they defeated Las Lomas High 2-0 in the quarterfinal round of the North Coast Section soccer championships. 

Both teams remained about even at halftime. Campolindo took four shots to Las Lomas' two shots in their first half. 

However, sophomore Lauren Petite scored in the 42nd minute amid a frenzy near the goal. Petite found the back of the net and excited her team with the first score of the game. 

For the next 33 minutes, Campolindo and Las Lomas remained close. Las Lomas started feeling the pressure to pick up a score before the game came to a close. Then, Cougar sophomore Emmy Melkonian scored with five minutes remaining on an assist by junior Shannon Stabler. 

The goal by Melkonian essentially ended the season for the Knights and gave the Cougars the opportunity to carry on to the semifinal round of NCS. 

"I think the past two games, we gave into the physicality of Las Lomas," said Campolindo head coach Ernesto Silva. "We prepared for a fast-paced game and ended up dominating the pace."

For Campolindo, an integral part of their team is their junior goalie, Sophie Leksan. She didn't allow a score from a Las Lomas team that averages just over two goals per game.

"We went out there and played as hard as we possibly could and we got it done," said Leksan. "It was a lot of pressure but it was good pressure. It was a lot of fun to play against them."

Next playoff game for Campolindo will be at Bishop O'Dowd at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Las Lomas looks to return strong next year. Of their 40 goals scored this year, 21 of those came from players that will return next year.
