Cantare Con Vivo Presents "Lord Nelson Mass & Fern Hill" (Walnut Creek)

A force of combined choirs with orchestra performing works by Haydn and Corigliano

Cantare Con Vivo Presents

Lord Nelson Mass & Fern Hill”

The Chorale joins forces with CSU East Bay, 180 singers in all, and accompanied by full orchestra, in presenting these two very different and moving choral masterpieces. Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis (Mass for Troubled Times) is thought by many music scholars to be Haydn’s greatest single composition. Its nickname reflects Napoleon’s surprising defeat in the Battle of the Nile in 1798 by Britain’s Admiral Horatio Nelson.

American composer John Corigliano, winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize in Music, composed Fern Hill in 1961 for choir and chamber orchestra. The text by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas reflects on youthful pleasures intertwined with the beauty of nature as viewed by a young and carefree speaker, later recognizing the loss of innocence that accompanies age and growing awareness.
